Colon Cleansing | Treating Breakouts Naturally: Is Oil-Free The Only Way To Treat Acne?
Like many women, I’ve been caught off-guard in my adult years by acne, something I didn’t even know was relevant for anyone over 18. Mine isn’t severe, but it doesn’t have to be in order to be a huge downer on your mood and self-esteem. So as with the rest of my health, I’ve taken a proactive and holistic approach: I’ve tried everything from diets and supplements to (no joke) colon cleansing in hopes of getting my skin to calm down. But treating breakouts naturally is confusing: Some say you can’t touch oily products or even foods with a ten-foot poll if you have acne; others tell you to stay away from a lot of the (dermatologist-approved) products and toxins, in favor of slathering your face with herbal extracts and oils. I’ve tried both options, and honestly: Neither worked for me. So what’s the deal, is oil-free really the only way to treat acne?
I asked Master Esthetician Mandy Eply , of Jillian Wright Clinical Skin Spa , for her take on all the oils, toxins, and other options for treating acne. Here’s what she had to say:
Do you have to use oil-free or “non-comodogenic” products exclusively if you have problems with acne?
The answer is no, not always. Your dermatologist or esthetician may have you using retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, sulphur, glycolic and/or salicylic acids that can a lot times dry out the skin. When one has dryness occur from using these products, it often counteracts what the intended use is: Getting rid of acne! This is because the skin needs a bit of oil on the surface to stay healthy, when it is constantly depleted, the skin will work overload to produce more oil causing the skin to start the pimple battle all over again. When I see this happening to my clients, I recommend using the acne products every other day, using basic skincare products on the alternate days in which most will have some oil in them (usually plant/fruit derived). If one is still oily throughout the entire day even while using these types of products, please stay clear of any oils get regular acne peels for your facial treatments.
Face oils have become a big trend in so many natural, non-toxic skin care lines. Are they off-limits for someone with frequent breakouts or acne?

I never recommend any acne-proned skin type to use pure face oils as a part of their home care regimen. Pimples will love the oil will stick around feeding off those oils, but you will be one unhappy person. Also, not only will it feed acne, it can start clogging pores causing blackheads milia as well.
What do you recommend for people who want to stay away from chemicals and toxins completely, but have skin problems like acne or breakouts?
If you are one who has problematic skin wants to go the chemical toxin free route, give it a shot. Sometimes, it can work, but unfortunately, most of the time it will not. I recommend Healthy Solutions by Carol . It has worked well with my clients with minor acne like hormonal breakouts, but if you suffer from a constant, every day problem, your skin will react better with retinoids, salicylic, sulphur, etc.
If you have stage two-four acne, it’s a must to stay away from exfoliating scrubs, even gentle ones, and microdermabrasion treatments. These will irritate acne, open those areas up and spread bacteria. The cycle will just continue. Try using at home Bioelements Kerafole Exfoliating Mask to eliminate dead skin cells.
When you use acne based products, please wear a sunscreen daily! Even in the winter months. Your skin becomes very sun sensitive and sun exposure can cause pimples to discolor more. Do not rely on a moisturizer with SPF, it isn’t enough. The proper sunscreen protection is one on it’s own, it is applied last in your regimen right before applying makeup. I suggest EltaMd UV Clear 46 . It is for acne-prone skin and will NOT feel greasy or heavy, and is guaranteed not to break you out.
Full disclosure: Aside from being a well-loved Master Esthetician at Jillian Wright Clinical Skin Spa, Mandy is also my own esthetician (when I have the time and money). Follow Mandy on Twitter @spaMandyNYC .
